Junkspace Drawings (2015–16)

The Junkspace Drawings are inspired by an essay by Rem Koolhaas titled, Junkspace (October, vol. 100, Spring 2002, MIT Press). The majority of contemporary architecture consists of what Rem Koolhaas calls junkspace; it is prefabricated, unremarkable, and dependent on climate controlled heating and cooling to be functional. Created from discarded construction plans, these drawings use layering, collage, and tearing techniques to problematize the mundanity of the built environment. Designs for fast food restaurants, gas stations, and high school cafeterias are layered on top of each other, revealing the cheapness and ubiquity of these everyday places.
